Thank you for taking time to read about me, and this once in a lifetime event I plan on attending. Here’s a little bit about me: I grew up in Sioux Falls and was privileged to be enrolled in the Sioux Falls Catholic School System through high school. After graduating from O’Gorman High school, I decided to further my education at the University of South Dakota. Go Yotes! I just finished up my junior year at USD in the School of Education. I will be student teaching in a fourth grade classroom at Saint Agnes Catholic Elementary School next year. I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to teach at a Catholic school, and begin giving back to the diocese that has given me so much.
On that note, I see the opportunity to attend World Youth Day (WYD) as another way to give back to the Sioux Falls diocese. In an article I recently read about WYD, Pope Francis answered the question, “What consequences do you expect as a result of World Youth Day?” He answered, “I expect a mess…I want a mess in the dioceses. I want people to go out. I want the church to go out to the street!” I want to bring this zeal and love of our Holy Father back with me. I desire to help ignite the light off our diocese, especially among the youth, and am confident attending WYD will assist me in doing so.
What a beautiful opportunity WYD presents to gain a broader perspective and knowledge of all different cultures coming together to appreciate one another and our Catholicism! I want to thank you for your help and prayers for my fellow pilgrims and me.

I am currently finishing up my freshmen year at St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. While at the Seminary, I plan on double majoring in Philosophy and Catholic Studies and currently plan on becoming, God willing, a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls. I first heard about World Youth Day a few years back when some of my friends mentioned older siblings that had attended previous years. I looked into it and had the strong desire to attend. It wasn't until the announcement that the next World Youth Day was being held in Krakow that I knew God was calling me to attend because of my newly found devotions to Pope St. John Paul II, St. Faustina Kowalska and the Divine Mercy which all have ties to Krakow and Poland itself. I later found out that the relics of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, one of my patrons at Seminary, will be on display in Krakow as well! I have been receiving a lot of hints that point to Poland this past year, some of them being in my various classes and I feel like it isnt coincidences! I wish to bring back a stronger love for Jesus as well as learn more about my three devotions in hopes to teach others in my various communities about them. Thank you all for your prayers and support! God Bless!

My name is Luke Fleck and I am just finishing my junior year at O’Gorman High School. I am involved in many activities. They include: show choir, concert choir, chamber choir, oral interpretation, and theatre. One of my biggest goals in life is to have a deep and strong relationship with our Lord. I believe this pilgrimage is an amazing opportunity to dive into my faith and explore it in a deeper way. I felt called to attend World Youth Day in Krakow for several reasons. First of all, I love Pope Francis, he is such an amazing man whom I look up to as a role model and getting to be in his presence will be an amazing experience. Secondly, another role model and by far my favorite saint is John Paul II. JPII’s homeland is Poland, so being able to walk where he walked will give me a deeper respect for the wonders he has done for the Church. Along those same lines, another role model in my life is Saint Maximilian Kolbe, in short, he was a priest during WWII and was killed for his faith at Auschwitz. During our pilgrimage, we will get to visit his shrine. All in all, I felt called to attend because it is a place where I can connect with three of my biggest role models all at once.I believe I can bring back several things to the SKD parish. This includes a deeper respect for those who have sacrificed their lives for the Church such as Maximilian Kolbe. Not everyone has the opportunity to attend World Youth Day in Poland, but everyone has the opportunity to get involved in their own Catholic community and to make amazing things happen. I will bring back a greater reverence for the different cultures around the world that we encounter while over there. Finally, I believe that as a pilgrim, I will come back and prove to the world that the Catholic religion is not dying out.

Hello! Currently I am a senior at O’Gorman High School and I will be attending the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota in the fall. There I will be studying Classical History. At O’Gorman I am involved in cheer and musical. When I heard about World Youth Day in Brazil a few years ago, I was completely jealous that I was not able to attend and celebrate my faith. I knew that an international meeting of people who share the same faith as me was right up my alley. I remember exactly where I was when I found out that the next WYD was in Poland- on the bus from the opening ceremony of March for Life 2014. With John Paul II and Poland’s Catholic history, I knew that this WYD was going to be like none before. There are too many reasons why I want to go on this pilgrimage. Ever since named Pope, I have had a great love for Pope Francis. His open, loving, and courageous character draws me closer to my faith. It is on my bucket list to get a selfie with the Pope! Something like World Youth Day is a once in a lifetime opportunity, to be able to share my love for my faith with millions of other young adults from around the world is exceptional. This love that my generation- the future leaders- shows for their faith is vital is the preservation of the Catholic Church against society’s change in morality. My pilgrimage to Poland will no doubt deepen my faith and stabilize it even more as I continue on to face the challenges of college. I know that what I receive from this experience will be multiplied for what I will be able to give to the community from it.

Most of you, hopefully, know me already as the Youth Minister for St. Katharine Drexel in Sioux Falls, SD. Prior to receiving this position, I made the decision to attend my second World Youth Day (WYD). God made it very clear to me that I must go on this pilgrimage as I was blessed to receive full funding right away. These four individuals who are mentioned above, I have had the pleasure of getting to know through our WYD meetings, activities at SKD, or through friends/family. I am astounded each time at their inspirational devotion and immense desire to attend WYD.
Some of the main reasons that I am attending WYD include a shift in behavior, a desire to help others, and the chance to bring back what I learn to the Youth at SKD. Firstly, I had a great experience when I was 16 and went to Germany in 2005; I learned a lot about myself and the power of coming together as one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Secondly, I know that there is a special grace when one goes on a pilgrimage and offers up the commodities that one is used to... I don't promise to do it easily, but I hope to at least offer many prayers for those who are in need of them. Thirdly, losing my mom almost a year ago to along struggle with cancer, I have drifted in and out of sadness and joy. I knew when I saw that this trip was starting on the first anniversary of her death that I was absolutely meant to attend - no doubt. My mom had a strong devotion to the Divine Mercy and I love JPII (I was heartbroken when he passed away before the 2005 WYD event). Finally, my strongest and deepest prayer is to bring back the graces that God will show to me during this pilgrimage to the youth at St. Katharine Drexel Parish. I know that there is always a large change whenever a new person fills a position, but my constant prayer is to do what He desires, not me.
